Q: Do I need construction experience to apply?

No. The Foundation Year pathway is specifically designed for students without construction experience who want to enter the industry.

However, if you do have experience (trades, site work, project coordination, even DIY and home renovation projects), mention it in your personal statement. Universities value real-world understanding and motivation.

Relevant experience includes:

  • Working in trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, bricklaying)
  • Site labouring or assistant roles
  • Warehouse or logistics coordination (transferable skills)
  • Property maintenance or facilities management
  • DIY projects, renovations, or volunteering on community building projects

Even informal experience shows initiative and genuine interest, which strengthens your application.

If you’re a complete beginner, that’s fine too. The Foundation Year teaches you construction fundamentals from scratch.


Q: Can EU citizens with settled status get full funding?

Yes. EU citizens with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme are eligible for the same funding as UK citizens.

Requirements:

  • Settled or pre-settled status granted under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Lived in the UK, Gibraltar, EEA, or Switzerland for 3 years immediately before your course starts
  • Proof of citizens’ rights or Irish citizenship (Common Travel Area arrangement)

You’ll receive:

  • Full tuition fee loan (up to £9,535/year)
  • Full maintenance loan (up to £13,762/year in London, £10,544/year outside London)
  • Access to additional grants if eligible

Important: EU nationals without settled or pre-settled status are not eligible for Student Finance England support for courses starting after 1 August 2021.
