Student Visa
A UK Student Visa allows international or overseas-fee students to live and study in the UK for the duration of their course.
What it is
A UK Student Visa (previously Tier 4) is the immigration permission you need if you do not have settled or pre-settled status and plan to study a course longer than six months. You apply online, pay the application and healthcare surcharge, and attend a biometric appointment.
Universities issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) once you meet academic and financial conditions. You use the CAS to complete your visa form and present evidence of tuition and maintenance funds.
Why it matters
Without the correct visa, you cannot enrol or access Student Finance. The visa type also dictates how many hours you can work during term time and whether family can join you.
Processing times vary by country, so plan carefully to avoid missing induction week. Student Finance decisions alone do not satisfy visa fund requirements, so you may need bank statements as well.
Common mistakes
- Applying before receiving a CAS: The visa will be refused without a valid CAS number linked to your chosen course.
- Using shared bank accounts incorrectly: The funds must be accessible to you, and statements must meet strict formatting rules.
- Booking travel too early: Wait for visa approval before paying for flights or accommodation.

While UniStart does not offer immigration advice, we help you coordinate course, finance, and accommodation timelines so you only apply for the visa when everything else is ready. Advisors also remind you to keep digital copies of receipts and CAS details for reference.
