Qualification
A qualification is an officially recognised certificate that proves you have completed a level of study or training, such as GCSEs, A Levels, or diplomas.
What it is
A qualification confirms that you met the standards of an education provider or awarding body. In the UK, qualifications are grouped by levels (1–8) on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) so universities can compare different pathways.
Examples include GCSEs at Level 2, A Levels at Level 3, Higher National Diplomas at Level 5, and bachelor’s degrees at Level 6. International awards can be mapped to these levels through statements of comparability.
Why it matters
Universities rely on qualifications to decide whether you can cope with the academic rigor of a course. Listing them clearly in your UCAS form saves time and reduces follow-up emails from admissions staff.
Student Finance England also checks that your course leads to a recognised higher-education qualification before releasing funds. Having evidence of your prior study helps them confirm you are not repeating a degree that already received public funding.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up levels: Label each qualification accurately; calling a Level 2 award a Level 3 can cause delays.
- Not translating overseas documents: Provide certified translations so admissions staff can verify authenticity.
- Leaving gaps: If you took a break from education, mention what you were doing—it reassures universities that you are returning with purpose.
