What it is

Widening participation (WP) initiatives aim to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups—such as low-income households, care leavers, mature learners, or certain ethnic communities—entering and completing higher education.

Universities run outreach events, mentoring, summer schools, and contextual admissions to level the playing field. Some programmes also continue after enrolment, offering study skills, networking, or financial support.

Why it matters
