Settled Status

Settled Status confirms you have lived in the UK long enough under the EU Settlement Scheme to access Home fees and Student Finance support.

What it is

Settled Status is the immigration permission granted to EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens (and their family members) who lived continuously in the UK for at least five years by the end of 2020. It allows you to stay indefinitely, work without restriction, and access public services.

You receive digital confirmation through your UK Visas and Immigration account rather than a physical document. Universities typically ask for a share code or official PDF to verify your status.

Why it matters

Holding Settled Status usually meets the residency test for Home Fee Status and Student Finance eligibility, provided you also live in the UK on the first day of the course. It simplifies proving your right to study, work placements, and rent accommodation.

If you only have Pre-Settled Status, you may still qualify for Home fees, but you must show additional evidence of UK residence. Settled Status offers the most straightforward route.

Common mistakes

  • Not updating details: If you change passport numbers, update your digital status so universities can confirm your identity quickly.
  • Sending screenshots instead of share codes: Admissions teams need official share codes that last 30 days.
  • Assuming family members are covered: Each person must hold their own status; dependent relatives cannot rely solely on your approval.

How UniStart helps

The UniStart app reminds you to generate a fresh share code before enrolment and stores guidance on acceptable residency proofs. Advisors can explain how Settled Status interacts with Student Finance rules without providing legal immigration advice.
